We recently purchased a Hypertherm XPR300 plasma cutter on a Messer MetalMaster Evolution gantry with The Slagger cutting table. This unitized system utilizes a whole new class of plasma called X-Definition (think high-definition on steroids!) that affords us the ability to pierce 2″ thick mild steel (sever 3-1/8”) and  1 ½” stainless (sever 3”). The cutting bed has a cutting area of up to 6’x15′ and the torch can home at travel speed of at 2,000 inches per minute.

The cut quality and tolerances from the new XPR300 are unlike anything that plasma has been able to produce in the past and cuts on stainless steel show a heat affected zone of less than .001″ due to a vented water injection (VWI) process. This tiny heat affected zone is very important in the marine environment as the properties of the parent metal, and more importantly their corrosion resistance, are virtually unchanged by this new plasma arc technology.

This new cutting system will afford Lyman-Morse Fabrication much greater control of project timelines and will undoubtedly open the door to a wider marketplace. Lyman-Morse is the first fabricator and boat builder in Maine with XPR300 technology.
